Siuslaw Outreach Services (SOS) and Soroptimist of Florence with support from PeaceHealth are hosting a Community Awareness Night Wednesday, April 12 at 6 p.m. (doors open at 5:30) at the Florence Events Center. The presenters include In Our Backyard, an organization that fights human trafficking through education, mobilization, and partnership, Dr. Susan Inman, a Florence Soroptimist member and local expert on human trafficking, as well as Mike Gallagher, who recently retired from the Portland Police Bureau and served his last 11 years in the Sex Trafficking Unit and was also a Task Force Officer out of Portland's FBI office. The Community Awareness Night will include a Human Trafficking Expert Panel Q&A, the opportunity to hear from national and community experts on best practices to protect your kids and teens, and real talk for parents about social media safety. Additionally, learn how children are at risk every day and in every home if they have internet access. Furthermore, human trafficking can happen to anyone--no matter race, age, or gender. The PTA Talent Show is open to all students in Siuslaw School District, but students must audition. Pick up an audition form from your school office or download at tinyurl.com/PTATalentShow. Audition forms are due to your school office by Friday, April 7, at 8:30 a.m. Auditions will be held April 17 and 18 after school in the Elementary Music Room. Those who are participating in the Talent Show will need to attend the rehearsal on May 2. The PTA Talent Show is May 3rd and 4th from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. ​The district has launched community outreach surveys for the school board's strategic planning initiative and the ODE Integrated Guidance process. School board strategic planning will be an ongoing process, with these surveys being an intermediate part of the process. From the data collected here, focus groups will be formed to examine district and building level data to help inform both goals and strategies for future operations. This will overlap into next school year. ODE's Integrated Guidance process is an alignment of six initiatives that have common elements, in an attempt to decrease redundancy in state reporting requirements by districts. This first draft aligns: High School Success, Student Investment Account, Continuous Improvement Planning, Career & Technical Education, Every Day Matters (student attendance), and Early Indicator Intervention Systems. Surveys are split to address four focal groups: parents & guardians, community members, students, and teachers & staff. Surveys will be open through the end of the day, Monday, March 20, and the Lane ESD staff will run a simple tally on the results so district staff can prepare initial reports for the board in April and prepare for the community forum groups. PTA Hosting Adolescent Wellness and Suicide Prevention Forum Wednesday, March 15, at 6 PM at Siuslaw Middle School . The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of mental health among young people and to highlight the resources available in Florence, Oregon that promote well-being and safety. The event can be livestreamed at tinyurl.com/florence pta or directly at https://www.youtube.com/live/N3LjvOvPp9Y?feature=share​. Several local and regional organizations have volunteered to support our community at this event, including Coastal Counseling, LLC, Siuslaw Outreach Services, Mobile Crisis Response Team, Oregon Integrated Health, PFLAG, Options Counseling and Family Services, Lines for Life, Lane County Public Health, among others. The focus of this talk will be on how to recognize signs of distress in kids and teenagers, what to do when those signs appear, and how to help someone who may be struggling.

Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one way to say thanks for all they do. These dedicated local leaders give their personal time and energy to handling the critical task of budgeting and overseeing the management of Oregon's public education structure. Our board chair is Bob Sneddon, our vice chair is Maureen Miltenberger. Our directors are Frank Armendariz, John Barnett, Brian Lacouture, Dianna Pimlott, and Kady Sneddon. ​On Saturday, December 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue will host the Marine Toys for Tots at the main fire station at 2625 Hwy 101 in Florence. U.S. Marines, Coast Guard members, the Florence Police Department, and your local firefighters will be giving away toys for infant children up to 14 years old. Since 1947, Marine Toys for Tots has provided toys to children of all income brackets. Celebrate the holidays at your local Fire/EMS department. Parking will be at the north parking lot of Siuslaw Middle School, and you’ll be told when to move up to the fire department. This year, parents/guardians may come into the station to get the toys. Documentation: Go to: www.toysfortots.org or the Toys for Tot’s link on www.svfr.org to see what qualifies as proper documentation. If you’d like to give toys, they are being collected at Florence’s Bi- Mart, True Value, and The Jolly Egret (on Bay Street). You can also donate money on the website. There are three options for getting toys. First: (By December 7) Go to: www.toysfortots.org or Facebook’s “Lane County Toys for Tots.” Once there, click on “Apply for Toys” and follow the steps. Toys will then be bagged and waiting for your arrival. No waiting. Second: Fill out the paperwork at the station before going in to choose the toys. First come, first serve. Third: Fill out the paperwork at the station and indicate what you wish, and the items will be bagged up and brought out to your car. First come, first serve.
