Siuslaw STEAM

What is STEAM?

STEAM is an acronym which represents the academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.  Historically, these disciplines have been taught separately.  The idea of STEAM education is to teach the disciplines integrated with each other in a student-centered classroom.  Students learn to work collaboratively with their peers to solve real-world problems.  Students engage in science inquiry, investigation, problem solving, and logical reasoning in the context of integrated units of instruction.  The teacher in a STEAM classroom acts more as a facilitator or coach than a direct instructor.  For a STEM article from the Department of Education, click here.
