Starting Monday, February 7, students will begin classes at 9:10 at the middle school and 9:00 at the high school. Each school day will end at the regularly scheduled time. Bus transportation will remain the same and will arrive to school quite a bit earlier than when class begins. Supervision will be provided and opportunities for homework help, exercise, and a nutritious breakfast are also available. The elementary school schedule remains unchanged. On Wednesday, January 26, the Siuslaw School Board held a special meeting and passed a resolution to have a late start to the school day. Our schools are currently experiencing substitute shortages, coupled with marked increase in student and staff absences. This extra time in the morning will provide teachers with additional time to prepare distance-learning materials for students who are absent and increase parent communication. By providing additional prep time in the morning, teachers will be available to cover for other teachers when they must be absent. Our goal is to keep our schools open and in-person. The change in schedule will not be permanent—it is set to expire by Spring Break at the latest.
