​Siuslaw School District has four Budget Committee positions open for the school board budget process.   Positions 1, 2(1-year unexpired term), 3 and 6 are open for appointment by the school board. Apply by December 5, 2022 by 5:00PM. The Budget Committee includes the Board of Directors and seven volunteer citizens who are appointed to serve 3-year terms. Committee members must be registered voters living within the boundaries of the Siuslaw School District, and cannot be employees, officers, or agents of the district.   The school board will consider applications at the December 14, 2022, school board meeting. Youth and young adults are invited to explore their own personal power and get ready to uplift their peers. This virtual 360° interactive experience with Uplift will motivate, empower, and support 14 to 19 year olds to change the lives of those around them. Peer support training provided: help friends in crisis, boost college resume, and join a community.   This is a one-time fun, free learning experience (selected applicants will be granted a scholarship, paid by the Oregon Health Authority). Participants will receive a $75 gift card for attending all the days of the event and completing the Uplift program. They will also be entered for prizes including the grand prize—a PS5! A $75 stipend will be earned by all Oregon youth who attend the full event.  There are three planned virtual sessions with one in November, February, and March. Registration for the November event is open until 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 9. We would like to invite you to attend our Open House on Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for a fun night. We will have a scavenger hunt that will help familiarize you with the building & staff, have fun with makerspace activities in the library, and have a chance to meet some of our community partners.  You will also have a chance to visit the Art room for some activities.  Upon your arrival, please start your evening by checking in with your classroom teacher to get your scavenger hunt card.  Each student will get one card to guide them.  The card can be turned in after all locations have been visited for a treat at the end of your visit. Our Siuslaw High School football team will play Vale High School in the first round of the OSAA 3A State Football Championship Tournament Saturday, November 5 at noon (Pacific Standard Time) at Vale High School. The game will also be streamed live on YouTube. Visit tinyurl.com/SiuslawFootball.
​Our Siuslaw Viking Volleyball Team is heading to the OSAA State Championships. The Quarterfinal is at 3:15 on Friday at Springfield High School on Court 2. If our lady Viks win, they'll play in the Semifinal game Friday night at 8:30 p.m. on Court 2. If they win the Semifinal game, they'll play in the Final game on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.   However, if they fall in the Quarterfinal, they'll play in the Consolation round on Saturday at 10 a.m. on Court 2. If they win the Consolation round, they'll play Saturday at 2:15 p.m. for 4th or 6th place on Court 2.   If our Viking Volleyball team falls in the Semifinal, they will play Saturday at 2:15 p.m. for 3rd or 5th place on Court 1. Three SHS Students Doing the Right Thing:  ​On Tuesday night, November 1, our SHS principal was driving from the high school to the middle school when he observed three high school students drop their backpacks and hustle into the road to help a motorist who had run out of gas.   They pushed the car through the intersection and into the middle school parking lot. "It's gratifying to see our kids do the right thing just because they are positioned to be of help,"  said Mr. Harklerode.

For spectators driving to Vale, the school does not have bleachers so bringing your own chairs is recommended. ​Siuslaw High School volleyball won their playoff game against Pleasant Hill today to move on to the State Tournament.   SHS  volleyball will next play Friday, November 4 at 3:15 p.m. at Springfield High School. Tickets can be purchased at www.osaa.org/shop/tickets once all the game details have been determined.
Have a safe and happy Halloween! On a day for goblins and tricks, make safety a treat. 3,200 Halloween-related injuries estimated per year over the last three years (55% pumpkin carving; 25% falls involving decorations, tripping on costumes, or walking while trick-or-treating; 20% lacertations, ingestions, allergic reactions and rashes). Some safety tips: 1) Prevent fires by using battery-operated lights or glow sticks. 2) Prevent trips and falls by wearing a costume that fits. 3) Keep kids safe by keeping pumpkin carving to adults. 4) Keep safe from COVID by following CDC advice to wear a mask.  GET READY FOR A THRILLING AND SAFE HALLOWEEN!

​Celebrate Red Ribbon Week at SES October 24th through the 31st.   Monday, October 24: Wear Red Day. Pledge to be drug free by wearing red.  Tuesday, October 25: Crazy Socks & Hat Day. Wear a pair of mismatched socks and a wacky hat or headband. Wednesday, October 26: Crazy Hair Day. Express yourself with wild and crazy hair.  Thursday and Friday, October 27-28: Parent Conference Day. No school for students. Monday, October 31: Storybook Character Costume Day. Come dressed as your favorite storybook character or dress up to represent your favorite sports team.  Reminder: No face paint or face coverings. No props of any kind. ​
The week of October 24th-28th is going to be full of changes and modified schedules for all SHS students. Please keep the following changes in mind as the week approaches.  Tuesday, October 25th- This is College Board day where 10th and 11th graders will be taking the PSAT. Here’s what the day looks like:  9th Graders- Off campus to tour University of Oregon. They will return for regular dismissal.  10th and 11th Graders- Proctoring the test begins at 8:15 and will last until noon. Some students will test in their PRIDE classrooms while others will be reassigned for the day. Lunch will be from 12:15-1:00. Students will select from a number of special topic presentations in the afternoon.   12th Graders- From 8:15 until noon, we have a number of Senior-specific topics for students.  Lunch will be from 12:15-1:00. Students will select from a number of special topic presentations in the afternoon.  Tuesday, October 25th, 5:00- Financial Aid Information Night. All students/families are welcome to attend though information is most relevant for 11th and 12th graders. We will have information on federal and state grant and loan programs for students, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is an important starting point for other forms of financial aid. Please be on the lookout for notifications from teachers about signing-up for conferences.  Wednesday, October 26th- School Nurse Ian Jarman will lead all students in a special broadcast lesson about the rise of fentanyl use as a public health concern. This lesson will be delivered during PRIDE classes.   Thursday, October 27th- This is a non-school day to allow for family conferences from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. However, in the morning, Seniors who signed-up in advance will take the SAT from 8:15 until about noon. Tests have been ordered for those students, and they will be taking it at no cost to them. Please be on the lookout for notifications from teachers about signing-up for conferences.  Thursday, October 27th, 6:30- Financial Aid Information Night. This is a repeat of Tuesday’s presentation offered at an alternate time to accommodate busy schedules.   Friday, October 28th- Family Conferences 8:00-12:00.    We know that schedule changes are disruptive to students and families. However, these changes allow us to offer a more robust set of opportunities for our students.
